A resident of the Sunshine Coast since 2021, Lauren has been working as a speech-language pathologist for over a decade in various settings across the lifespan. In recent years, she has worked in the public sector within hospital and community care, assessing and treating adults with acquired communication disorders and swallowing impairments. 

She actively seeks out professional development in additional areas of practice, with particular clinical interests including literacy, developmental language disorder, expressive language, articulation, and fluency.

As the mother of two school-aged children in the public education system, she understands first-hand the challenges facing parents of kids with learning differences. She hopes to alleviate some of the worry associated with service gaps in her home community.

As required by the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), I am a speech-language pathologist registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia. Any unresolved concerns can be raised directly with the College here.

  

Do I need a referral? 
No referral is required for private services; simply contact me to get started. 

How does it work? 
We start with a 15-minute phone or video consultation (free of charge) to determine your initial concerns and goals. If additional SLP involvement is recommended, we will schedule an in-person or virtual appointment to complete a screening and/or assessment of your targeted communication skills. At the end of the consultation, results and recommendations will be shared. A summary report can be provided for an additional fee if requested by the client. 

Why work with an SLP for reading?
SLPs have advanced training in how language develops and how difficulties with sounds, words, and meaning can impact reading. This allows for precise, individualized instruction when reading progress has stalled.

Language-based reading intervention focuses on structured literacy instruction, including phonological awareness, decoding, encoding, fluency, comprehension, and progress monitoring to guide instruction.

This service is provided within the scope of speech-language pathology. It is designed for students whose primary concern is reading and written language development and does not automatically include comprehensive diagnostic assessment or formal reporting unless requested.

Speech-language assessment and treatment involve in-depth evaluation of speech, language, and communication skills; individualized treatment planning; and formal documentation for medical, educational, or funding purposes.

These services may be eligible for extended health benefits and are typically considered a medical expense for tax purposes.

How often and for how long will I/my child need therapy? 
The frequency and length of sessions is determined in consultation with the SLP. Some clients only require one or two sessions, others attend therapy for weeks or months as needed. For those clients, weekly sessions are typical; however, more frequent sessions may be beneficial for initial literacy coaching, ideally two times per week. 

Are you Orton-Gillingham trained?
I do not currently hold Orton-Gillingham certification; however, my background and expertise encompass the principles of OG intervention. I draw from many structured literacy and phonics-based approaches tailored to the individual’s needs.

Are you a Registered Autism Service Provider (RASP)? 
I am not currently pursuing registration as an autism service provider. 

What funding is available? Do you offer direct billing? 
Many extended health and insurance companies provide coverage up to a certain amount for registered speech-language pathology services. SLP assessment and treatment are also considered an eligible medical expense for income tax purposes. (See above for differentiation between literacy intervention and SLP services I provide.)

I do not currently offer direct billing, meaning payment is due on the day of service. Receipts are provided for SLP services for clients to submit for insurance if available.

Hourly rate: $160
(includes 50 minutes of direct time and 10 minutes of preparation, documentation, etc.)

Travel / In-Home Therapy (if applicable)

Home-visit therapy sessions: session rate + travel fee

Travel fee: $0.65 per km OR flat fee depending on distance from Roberts Creek
A travel fee will be discussed and agreed upon in advance.

Additional services such as teacher or team/professional consultations, letters, and progress reports are billed at the hourly SLP rate of $160.
